Utah is full of majestic mountains and startling contrasts, among them the sight of delicate gardens peeking through towering ancient rock faces. As we hiked up a steep trail north of Provo at an elevation of about a 5,000 feet, we saw mosses and lichens in many colors and fetching, indomitable alpine plants appearing between the cracks. The rocks themselves were astonishing colors, many reminiscent of marble.
