After stocking up on good things to eat at the terrific (but very pricey) healthful store Mana in Paia, we stopped for a walk along the beach on the way back to Haiku. We saw these beautiful algae islands seemingly afloat at the shore line:
Then we came upon many large stones sculpted by the waves:
On some of the stones there were clusters of shellfish. Are they tiny limpets?
And then we watched a Biblical sunset…Just another ordinary day on Maui…

As V.P. With the Maui Aloha Aina Association, I just got word you will be attending our Maui Body & Soil Farm Health Conference. Thank you & you should enjoy it for sure. I grew up in Haiku although I’ve lived in Kahului the last ten years, Haiku is still my Home Town.
Looking forward to meeting you. I will be the one racing around between everything. Kind of the does what ever need done person.
Spent many hours around your algae islands and those very rocks. Never been in snow either.

How lovely to hear from you. I will look for the person running around. We have rented a little cottage in Haiku and will be here until 1/24. Dreading return to the snow, but my plants at home miss me for sure.

I just wanted to say that it looks like a beautiful place to spend cold winter-days!
Ron and I love the warm, tropical places and have been to quite a few, but never Hawaii.

Great pictures! . The little black shells are “pipipi” or Black Nerites. the green algae in the top photo is “limu palahalaha” (Sea Lettuce, or Ulva sp.) and is used for sea vegetables in Polynesian culture. Good eye – you find food every where you go!
